Her areas of interest and expertise include suicide prevention, evidence-based interventions for PTSD and strategies for addressing provider burnout. She maintains a teaching faculty appointment with the University of Washington’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and is Board Certified in Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies through the American Board of Professional Psychology.

Dr. Ying “Alison” Cheng currently directs the Learning Analytics and Measurement in Behavioral Sciences (LAMBS) lab. Her research focuses on two areas: 1) Psychological and educational measurement; 2) Learning analytics.
In the first area, she is interested in theoretical development and applications of item response theory (IRT), including computerized adaptive testing (CAT), test equity across different ethnicity/gender groups (formally known as different item functioning or DIF), classification accuracy and consistency with licensure/certification of state graduation exams, and cognitive diagnostic models and their applications to CAT.
In the second area, she is interested in applying data mining techniques to large-scale, multi-modal learning data, e.g., process data collected from human-computer interactions.

Elizabeth Schandelmeier has supported grieving families for over a decade, including as a palliative social worker at a major Level 1 trauma and transplant hospital where she supported families through illness, decision-making and end of life. She is currently a Senior Bereavement Counselor for Family Hospice, part of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where she provides anticipatory, preparatory and bereavement counseling and is also responsible for training palliative MD fellows in bereavement and end of life communication. She facilitates a support group for people with malignant brain tumors at Cancer Bridges and has a small private practice (Howling Lion Grief Support) focusing exclusively on grief, loss, death and dying.

Professor and Chair of Bastyr University’s Department of Counseling & Health Psychology
Sylvie P. Shuttleworth is a full professor in the Department of Counseling and Health Psychology at Bastyr University—California. She also serves as the department’s Chair, the Program Director and Director of Clinical Training for Bastyr’s Counseling Psychology master’s program, and as a peer counseling coordinator. She has also taught undergraduate and graduate psychology courses at the University of San Diego, San Diego City College, California School of Professional Psychology and the University of Massachusetts.
Dr. Shuttleworth’s teaching and research interests include legal and ethical issues in mental health practice, the supervisory experience, evidence-based practice, attachment styles and coping strategies, therapeutic alliance, motivational interviewing and healthy relationship skills. Dr. Jason Horowitz, PhD, LP is a licensed clinical psychologist with experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and families. Dr. Horowitz earned his PhD at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee and completed a fellowship at the University of Minnesota. He has previously been on the faculty at the University of Minnesota, and began working in the UW Department of Psychiatry in 2008. Since that time, he has been involved in both our clinical and training missions. He led the effort to create a child psychology track for the UW postdoctoral internship, and he has been the director of that track since its inception. He runs the child therapy training clinic, which provides therapy demonstrations and instruction to interns, postdocs, and psychiatry fellows.

Dr. Pirayesh holds a Bachelor’s in Neuroscience and Education from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master’s in Developmental Psychology from Columbia University where her work focused primarily on children’s development of mathematical thinking and cognitive neuroscience. Her doctoral work at Loyola Marymount University focused on educational leadership and social justice. She has worked as a learning specialist and educational therapist in private practice for over a decade. While the emphasis of her work is on remediating learning disabilities in a one-on-one setting, she is also a sought after speaker and community advocate for children and families around learning rights. She works with children grades 1-12 and covers a wide range of learning difficulties including dyslexia, ADHD, and spectrum disorders. In 2020, Dr. Pirayesh launched The Difference is Not Deficit Project to help promote the importance of seeing learning disability as a social justice issue. In addition to her private practice and advocacy work, Dr. Pirayesh is also adjunct faculty at Pepperdine University and is involved with a number of service organizations including The Association of Educational Therapists.

She is currently licensed as an advanced practice registered nurse in Louisiana and is certified as both a psychiatric nurse practitioner and a family nurse practitioner. Additionally, she was licensed as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Louisiana for 35 years. She is a Professor and Department Head of graduate nursing at McNeese State University. She has been employed almost exclusively in the psychiatric mental health since 1975.
